Non-Competitive GOP Gain
The match-up this year will be between Dem nominee Rick Weiland, Independent Larry Pressler, and an undetermined Republican. Former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds (R) seems to be the front runner right now for the nomination as well as this fall's general.
Polling in this race has been scarce, but a recent PPP poll puts Rounds up 38%-28% over Weiland. This poll also gives 15% to the independent, Pressler. Pressler is a former Republican US Senator and in a closer race might help the Democrat by splitting the vote. However, in this race, that just does not seem possible. This poll also shows 15% undecided. The only chance the Democrat seems to have here is to split the undecided vote 11%-4%-0%. The cook PVI for South Dakota is R+10. With that kind of spread, and the current political climate this race is all but sown up for any Republican that will win the nomination.
